Recycle at home - Convert waste into compost

Heroes

Who are the heroes in this world?  What does it take to be a hero?

What difference can I make? I am so small, and the problems so big.

You too can be a hero!

Meet a hero: Eisenia fetida “Red-Wiggler”

Reg wigglers are the most efficient recyclers on the planet.

And…

Worm Café

Worm Café makes it easy to convert green-waste, cardboard, paper into rich and valuable compost Vermicompost and Vermitea (liquid-fertilizer), without smell or stress and almost no work for you.

If something as small as a worm can make such a difference, imagine the difference you can make!

It may be doubted whether there are many other animals which have played so important a part in the history of the world, as have these lowly organized creatures.”

– Charles Darwin 1881

Why:

90 per cent of the resources we consume are either thrown away as wastes

The average Swiss person produces 2-3 kg of waste per day

The average person throws away CHF 500 worth of edible food annually

Waste is growing

Rotting waste produces methane, a powerful greenhouse gas that causes climate change

Inorganic fertilizers kill soil organisms, cause pollution in waterways and are based on fossil fuels

Current methods of waste disposal have limited social, environmental, and economic benefits

A lot of it can be processed into rich soil conditioners using earthworms/vermiculture

In nature there is no such thing as waste!

Organic waste accounts for up to 80% of waste in hotels, canteens, and restaurants

Organic waste = Food for Gardens

The benefits of Vermicomposting

Compared to parent soil, the castings of normal earthworms contain:

7 times the available phosphorus

6 times the available nitrogen

3 times the available magnesium

2 times the available carbon

1.5 times the available calcium

Worm farming is an odorless process

Earthworms carry no parasites on their bodies

They are used to remove heavy metals from soil

Earthworms do not carry any organisms harmful to humans

How:

Worm Café is made from 100% recycled materials. It can be placed in your garden, on your balcony, cellar. It can even be placed in your kitchen. It can be used for restaurants, apartment blocks or community gardens.

Using Vermicompost and Vermitea:

You can use the Vermicompost alone, which is perfect for seedlings or you can mix it with other earth, and it will immediately improve the quality of that soil and will continue to do so over long period of time. The vermicompost is full of minerals and healthy microbes that help plants grow faster and stronger.

Vermitea can be harvested as often as you like. Simply open the tap and put a container under the worm café. Vermitea can be diluted with water 1:5 and used for all your plants and flowers.

Getting started:

Start today with a Starter Pack of 500g worms and a Worm Café.

Its quick and easy to set-up in 15minutes. Instructions on the box lid

Put the worms inside and they will start eating and multiplying

Worms can eat up their body weight every day

They will eat almost everything you give them, and they will never complain.

Caring for your Worm Cafe:

You can feed them every day or once a week or whenever you have waste

500g of worms can eat 1- 2kg per week

Giving them “shower” now and then keeps the box moist and the worms happy

If the Worm Café gets too wet, just add more cardboard

They don’t like citrus, onions or chilly, or acidic foods that could burn their skin

Add garden earth, gravel stones or lime powder to help them digest the food

Keep a layer of paper or carton on the top

Place food under the carton or make hole, place the food inside and close the hole

Feeding them more than they can eat motivates them to keep on reproducing

But overfeeding could cause the food to rot and the box to smell

If it is very cold and they are outside, you can put a blanket over the box

If it is very hot, a frozen PET bottle will cool the box nicely

Adding a second tray:

Wait ca. 4 months before starting the next tray.

Give the worms enough time to increase their population and for the development of microbes

When first tray until it is full, put a layer of cardboard in the base of the second tray

Scoop out the top layer of earth and worms from the first tray and put in in the second tray

Place the new tray on top of the full tray, so that the trays touch

The worms can pass easily through the holes into the upper tray

The worms will migrate upwards towards the fresh food

You can also add some gravel, garden soil into the box

When the second tray is full, place the 3rd tray on top

When the 3rd tray is full the first tray will contain perfect, fresh compost earth

Harvesting Vermicompost:

When the 3rd tray is full the first tray will almost be pure compost earth, and ready to harvest

Empty out the soft, rich black earth onto a large plastic and shine a light (or sun) on the compost

Worms don’t like light so they will move away from the light

From the top downwards, scrape away the top layer of soil until you see worms again

Wait about 5-10 minutes and do it again

Leftover worms or earth at the bottom can be put back into the Worm Café or into your garden

From 1 tray you will harvest approximately 4-5 kg of Vermicompost

You can harvest a tray every 1-2 months once the Worm Cafe is fully functional
